The Effect of Peer-Guided Education on Organ Donation on Organ Donation Attitude

This research will be conducted to determine the effect of peer-guided organ donation education given to anesthesia students on their attitudes towards organ donation.

About this study

There are many people waiting for organ donation in our country. Therefore, it is important to develop a positive attitude towards organ donation in our society. This study was planned to determine the effect of peer-guided organ donation education to be given to anesthesia students on the attitude towards organ donation. In the study, anesthesia students will be informed about organ donation. It was thought that the education given towards organ donation will develop a positive attitude in students.

Inclusion criteria

  • Being 17 years of age or older, studying in the program in which the research is conducted, and agreeing to participate in the research voluntarily.

Exclusion criteria

  • Having received prior training on organ donation

Treatment and study plan

Peer-led education on organ donation

Behavioral

The training on organ donation will be conducted under peer guidance. The training will be implemented using face-to-face lectures, slide presentations, brochures and group discussions. It will be conducted at Süleyman Demirel University in the 2025-2026 academic year for first-year anesthesia students. The content of the training includes the concept of organ donation, the conditions for becoming a donor (physical, legal, religious), the social dimension of organ donation and attitude development sessions through group discussions. The training, planned in four sessions, will last two hours in total.

Primary outcomes

  1. Change in "Organ Donation Attitude Scale" Positive Attitude Sub-dimension Score

    Time frame: Baseline, immediately after completion of the 4-week training program (Week 4), and 1 month after completion of the training program (Week 8).

    The Organ Donation Attitude Scale was originally developed by Parisi and Kanz (1986) and later adapted to 46 items by Kent and Owens (1995). The Turkish validity and reliability study was conducted by Yazıcı Sayın (2016). After removing items 6, 7, 12, 19, 27, and 45, the final version consists of 40 items rated on a 6-point Likert scale (from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree") and includes two subscales. TThe Positive Attitude Subscale of the Organ Donation Attitude Scale consists of 20 items assessing altruism and moral values and beliefs related to organ donation. Each item is rated on a 6-point Likert scale. The total subscale score ranges from 20 to 120. Higher scores indicate a more positive attitude toward organ donation and therefore represent a better outcome. Change in scores will be evaluated across the three assessment time points.

  2. Change in "Organ Donation Attitude Scale" Negative Attitude Sub-dimension Score

    Time frame: Baseline, immediately after completion of the 4-week training program (Week 4), and 1 month after completion of the training program (Week 8).

The Negative Attitude Subscale of the Organ Donation Attitude Scale consists of 20 items assessing fear of medical neglect and fear of bodily injury related to organ donation. Each item is rated on a 6-point Likert scale. The total score ranges from 20 to 120. Higher scores indicate a more negative attitude toward organ donation and represent a worse outcome. Changes in the Negative Attitude Subscale score will be evaluated at baseline, immediately after the training program, and at the 1-month follow-up.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Change in organ/tissue donation knowledge, awareness, and donation intention item scores

    Time frame: Baseline, immediately after completion of the 4-week training program (Week 4), and 1 month after completion of the training program (Week 8).

    Participants' knowledge, awareness, and intention regarding organ/tissue donation were assessed using items included in the researcher-developed organ/tissue donation knowledge and attitude form. These items evaluated participants' perceived level of knowledge about organ/tissue donation, knowledge of the required steps to become an organ/tissue donor, intention to donate organs/tissues, and perceived access to reliable sources of information about organ donation. Each item was scored using Likert-type response options. Higher scores indicated a more positive level of knowledge, awareness, or donation intention for the relevant item. Changes in item scores were evaluated across the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up measurements.
