Treatment and study plan

multicomponent exercise

Behavioral

Supervised balance-coordination exercises and lower-extremity strengthening using elastic bands (quadriceps, hamstrings, hip abductors, hip adductors) and mini-squats.

Balance exercise

Behavioral

Supervised balance-coordination tasks, warm-up, and stretching

Primary outcomes

  1. Berg Balance Scale (BBS)

Time frame: Baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months

A 14-item performance measure scored from 0 to 56; higher scores indicate better balance.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Handgrip strength

Time frame: Baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months.

Maximal handgrip strength of the stronger hand using a dynamometer; higher values indicate greater strength.

  2. 10-m walk time

Time frame: Baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months.

Recorded over the middle 10 m of a 14-m walkway; shorter times indicate faster gait.

  3. Short Form-36 (SF-36)

Time frame: Baseline, 8 weeks, and 6 months.

Health-related quality of life measured across eight domains; higher scores indicate better health status
