The Influence of Water Intake on Snack Intake in Children

The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of including water as a beverage at a snack on food intake in children.

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Like, are willing to eat study food
  • Does not have allergies, food restrictions or health issues that prevent them from consuming study food
  • Will attend summer camp during both of the scheduled study visits

Primary outcomes

  1. Change in food intake

    Time frame: Study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Weight (grams) of the food consumed

  2. Change in energy intake

    Time frame: Study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Energy (kcal) of the food consumed

Secondary outcomes

  1. Change in rating of liking of the taste of food sample

    Time frame: From before the snack to after the snack in study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Measured on a 100-mm visual analogue scale ranging from super yucky (0 mm) to super yummy (100 mm).

  2. Change in rating of thirst

    Time frame: From before the snack to after the snack in study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Measured on a 100-mm visual analogue scale ranging from not at all thirsty (0 mm) to extremely thirsty (100 mm)

  3. Change in rating of fullness

    Time frame: From before to after the snack in study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Measured on a 4-point scale ranging from completely empty (1) to completely full (4)

  4. Snack duration

    Time frame: Study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Time (min) spent consuming the snack

Other outcomes

  1. Water intake

    Time frame: Study visit 1 (day 1), and study visit 2 (day 2)

    Weight (grams) water consumed
