Taurodontism and Periodontal Status

This retrospective cross-sectional observational study aims to evaluate the relationship between taurodontism and periodontal status. Clinical periodontal parameters and panoramic radiographs of systemically healthy adults will be retrospectively reviewed. Participants will be classified according to the presence or absence of taurodontism, and periodontal status will be assessed using clinical and radiographic findings. The study aims to determine whether taurodontism is associated with periodontal disease and periodontal health.

Inclusion criteria

Adults aged 18 to 65 years. Systemically healthy individuals. Availability of a diagnostic-quality panoramic radiograph. Presence of at least 20 natural teeth. No missing premolar or molar teeth. Availability of complete periodontal clinical records, including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI).

Exclusion criteria

Poor-quality or nondiagnostic panoramic radiographs. Teeth with extensive caries or restorations that interfere with taurodontism assessment.

Fractured teeth. Impacted teeth. Teeth with fused roots or an indistinguishable furcation area. Individuals with systemic diseases or conditions known to affect periodontal tissues.

Incomplete clinical or radiographic records.

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. Periodontal status/ Probing Depth (PD)

    Time frame: Baseline

Probing depth (PD) will be measured in millimeters at six sites per tooth using a periodontal probe and compared between participants with and without taurodontism.

  2. Periodontal Status/ Clinical Attachment Level (CAL)

    Time frame: Baseline

Clinical attachment level (CAL) will be measured in millimeters at six sites per tooth and compared between participants with and without taurodontism.

  3. Periodontal Status/ Bleeding on Probing (BOP)

    Time frame: Baseline

Bleeding on probing will be recorded as the presence or absence of bleeding after periodontal probing and compared between participants with and without taurodontism.

  4. Periodontal status/ Plaque Index (PI)

    Time frame: Baseline

Plaque Index (PI) will be assessed to evaluate oral hygiene status and compared between participants with and without taurodontism.

  5. Periodontal Status/ Gingival Index (GI)

    Time frame: Baseline

Gingival Index (GI) will be used to evaluate gingival inflammation and compared between participants with and without taurodontism.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHIP-14)

    Time frame: Baseline

Oral health-related quality of life will be assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire.
