About this study

The aim of this study is to assess attitudes toward tattooing and piercing and to evaluate awareness of associated dermatological risks among medical clinical students. Objectives are to determine the prevalence of tattoos and piercings among medical students, to evaluate students' attitudes toward tattooing and piercing, to assess awareness of dermatological complications related to these practices, to compare knowledge and attitudes between preclinical and clinical students.

Healthy volunteers accepted: Yes

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

  • Being a registered medical student
  • Voluntary participation

Primary outcomes

  1. The level of awareness of dermatological risks associated with tattooing and body piercing among medical students

    Time frame: at the enrollment

    This includes knowledge regarding complications such as: Infections, Allergic reactions, Keloid or hypertrohic scar.

    Categorized knowledge level (adequate vs. inadequate) is based on a chi-square test for knowledge (yes/no).

  2. Attitudes toward tattooing and body piercing

    Time frame: at the enrollment

    Attitude scores,

    Positive vs. negative perceptions

    Perceived social and professional acceptability

  3. Prevalence of tattoos and piercings

    Time frame: at the enrollment

    Proportion of students with tattoos

    Proportion of students with piercings

    Distribution by sex and academic year

  4. Comparing the of medical students in different classes

    Time frame: at the enrollment

    Differences in knowledge levels

    Differences in attitudes

    Differences in prevalence of tattooing/piercing
