Sarcopenia Indicators After Bariatric Surgery

This prospective observational study aims to evaluate longitudinal changes in sarcopenia-related parameters in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Obesity and rapid weight loss following bariatric surgery may lead to changes in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance, which are important components of sarcopenia.

Participants will be evaluated before bariatric surgery and during postoperative follow-up visits. Muscle thickness will be assessed using ultrasonography of the femoral muscles. Muscle strength and physical performance will be evaluated using handgrip strength, the 5-meter walk test, and the five-times sit-to-stand test.

The study aims to investigate the effects of bariatric surgery on muscle function and physical performance over time and to contribute to the early identification of sarcopenia risk in this patient population.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Inclusion criteria

  • Adults aged 18 years and older
  • Patients scheduled to undergo bariatric surgery
  • Ability to participate in physical performance tests
  • Ability to provide written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

  • Presence of neurological or musculoskeletal disorders affecting muscle strength or physical performance
  • Severe cardiopulmonary disease limiting physical activity
  • Active malignancy
  • Pregnancy
  • Inability to complete study assessments
  • Refusal to participate in the study

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. Change in Femoral Muscle Thickness

    Time frame: Preoperative baseline, postoperative 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month assessments

    Femoral muscle thickness will be assessed using ultrasonography before bariatric surgery and during postoperative follow-up visits to evaluate longitudinal changes associated with sarcopenia.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Change in Handgrip Strength

    Time frame: Preoperative baseline, postoperative 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month assessments

    Handgrip strength will be evaluated before bariatric surgery and during postoperative follow-up visits to assess changes in muscle strength.

  2. Change in Five-Times Sit-to-Stand Test Performance

    Time frame: Preoperative baseline, postoperative 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month, and 12th month assessments

    Functional lower extremity performance will be evaluated using the five-times sit-to-stand test before bariatric surgery and during postoperative follow-up visits.
