RISE for Nurse Preceptors

The purpose of this study is to determine whether RISE for Nurse Preceptors has a significant impact on nurse preceptors' burnout, resilience, insight, self-compassion, and empowerment, as well as mental well-being, in their personal lives and their working environment.

Inclusion criteria

  • Adult ≥ 18 years old
  • Licensed as an RN
  • Employed by AdventHealth Rocky Mountain Region
  • Completion of the AdventHealth preceptor training
  • Has precepted ≥ 48 hours within the past calendar year in an AdventHealth hospital setting or outpatient emergency center
  • Able to speak, read, and understand English fluently
  • Able to provide informed consent
  • Willing and able to comply with all study procedures and requirements for the duration of the study.

Exclusion criteria

  • Has precepted < 48 hours within the past calendar year
  • Does not pass the brief risk assessment in the pre-intervention introduction meeting with the LMHC facilitator
  • Unwilling or unable to comply with all study procedures and requirements for the duration of the study.

RISE for Nurse Preceptors Program

Behavioral

Psychoeducational group program designed to impact resilience, insight, self-compassion, and empowerment

Primary outcomes

  1. Professional Quality of Life Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    30-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 1=never, 2=rarely, 3=sometimes, 4=often, 5=very often

Secondary outcomes

  1. Posttraumatic Growth Inventory

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    21-item questionnaire with a scale of 0-5, with 0 meaning I did not experience this change as a result of my crisis; and 5 meaning I experienced this change to a very great degree as a result of my crisis

  2. Brief Resilience Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    6-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 1=strongly agree, 2=disagree, 3=neutral, 4=agree, 5=strongly agree

  3. Self-Reflection and Insight Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    20-item questionnaire with a scale of 1-6; with 1 meaning strongly disagree; and 6 meaning strongly agree

  4. Self-Compassion Scale - Short Form

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    12-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 1=almost never, 2, 3, 4, 5=almost always

  5. Psychological Empowerment Instrument

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    12-item questionnaire with a scale of A-G, with A meaning very strongly disagree; and G meaning very strongly agree

  6. General Self-Efficacy Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    10-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 1=not at all true, 2=barely true, 3=moderately true, 4=exactly true

  7. Perceived Stress Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    10-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 0=never, 1=almost never, 2=sometimes, 3=fairly often, 4=very often

  8. Moral Injury Outcomes Scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    14-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 0=strongly agree, 1=disagree, 2=neither agree or disagree, 3=agree, 4=strongly agree

  9. Brief COPE

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    28-item questionnaire with a scale of 1-4, with 1 meaning I haven't been doing this at all; and 4 meaning I've been doing this a lot

  10. Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 2 item scale

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    2-item questionnaire with the following response categories: 0=not at all, 1=several days, 2=more than half the days, 3=nearly every day

  11. Patient Health Questionnaire - 2 item

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    2-item scale with the following response categories: 0=not at all, 1=several days, 2=more than half the days, 3=nearly every day

  12. Preceptor Self-Assessment Tool

    Time frame: Baseline, endpoint, and 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-up

    40-item scale with the following response categories: 1 (lowest), 2 (low), 3 (average), 4 (high), 5 (highest).
