Relationship Between Mechanical Ventilator's Modes , Intra-Abdominal Pressure, Mechanical Power and Gastric Tube Tolerance Among Mechanically Ventilated Patients.

The study aims to:

Explore the relationship between MV modes on the IA, MP and GT tolerance among mechanically ventilated patients.

About this study

Modes of MVs by means of their differential effect on intra-thoracic pressure can have a significant influence on IAP. An ideal ventilation mode could optimize respiratory mechanics and may protect a variety of body systems functions. Among the many MV modes, SIMV, BIPAP and CPAP are the three most used modes

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • adult patients requiring MV in ICU

Exclusion criteria

  • patients with abdominal or chest trauma,
  • patients with intra abdominal pathologies,
  • patients who had received more than 10 units of red blood cells or more than 5 liters of intravenous liquids over the last 24 h,
  • patients with sepsis or hepatic, or renal dysfunction,
  • patients in positions other than supine, and
  • body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2.

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. intra-abdominal pressure "IAP"

    Time frame: day 1

    IAP will be measured through foly catheter

  2. mechanical power

    Time frame: day 1

    it will be: MP (J/ min) =0.098×RR×Vt × [Peak Pressure-(DP/2)] measured through folly catheter

  3. gastric tube tolerance

    Time frame: day 1

    The GT tolerance will be presented as yes if the patient was on GT feeding, and no, if the patient had delayed gastric emptying and converted to gastric drain
