REduction of Physical Inactivity Facing the CAncer

Study 1:

The investigator hypothesizes that the level of knowledge about the benefits of physical activity, physical activity level and physical fatigue level observed in cancer patients, would influence their beliefs about physical activity and their intention to engage in AP.

About this study

Study 2:

Because of a recent research, it is shown that a narrative message from a peer generates an identification, a sense of self-efficacy and intention to practice in sedentary patients with breast cancer.

The investigator hypothesize that a promotional message about physical activity, issued by a self-determined peer (intrinsic motivation), compared to a non-self-determined peer (extrinsic motivation), generate higher scores of positive beliefs about physical activity and intention to engage in a physical activity program for sedentary patients.

These promotional messages will be delivered through two videos, one featuring the self-determined pair, the other featuring the non-self-determined pair.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • PS 0-3
  • Patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment
  • neoadjuvant, adjuvant, metastatic, any histological type, any stage breast cancer
  • Sedentary Patients (physical activity score of Dijon less than or equal to 20)

Exclusion criteria

  • Patients with PS greater than 3
  • Patients with cognitive disorders not allowing them to understand the questionnaires and study procedures

Primary outcomes

  1. Cancer Beliefs and Exercise Scale - CaBES

    Time frame: Post-intervention on Day 1

    CaBES scores were only collected for Study 2 to evaluate the impact of randomized experimental conditions (IM vs. EM messages) on psychological barriers. The scale measures 5 dimensions of exercise-related beliefs: motivation (MOT), self-efficacy (AUTOEFF), treatment side effects (EFFSEC), benefits (BEN), and risks (RIS). Each dimension score ranges from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 6. Higher values represent a better outcome (1 indicates the lowest level and 6 indicates the highest level).

Secondary outcomes

  1. Perceived Similarity Between the Peer and the Patient.

    Time frame: Day 1 : Time 2 (Post-intervention).

    Evaluation of the identification with the character in the video using 3 items adapted from McQueen and Kreuter (1999). Scores range from 1 to 6, with higher scores indicating stronger perceived similarity.

  2. Perceived Physical Capacity (Self-Efficacy).

    Time frame: Day 1 : Time 2 (Post-intervention)

    Assessment of the patient's perceived physical capabilities based on Bandura's (1997) Self-Efficacy Theory. Measured using 3 items. Scores range from 1 to 6, with higher scores indicating higher perceived capacity.
