Key information

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

IInclusion Criteria:

  • Adults aged 18-40 years.
  • Patients diagnosed with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
  • Patients scheduled to undergo temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis.
  • Ability to undergo ultrasonographic and strain elastographic evaluation of the masseter muscle.
  • Written informed consent provided.

Exclusion criteria

  • Previous temporomandibular joint surgery.
  • History of trauma, cyst, tumor, or infection involving the temporomandibular joint or masseter muscle.
  • Neuromuscular disorders affecting the masticatory muscles.
  • Systemic diseases or medications that may affect masseter muscle thickness or elasticity.
  • Inability or unwillingness to provide written informed consent.

Treatment and study plan

Temporomandibular Joint Arthrocentesis

Procedure

Temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis performed as part of routine clinical care. Ultrasonographic and strain elastographic assessments of the masseter muscle are performed before and after the procedure.

Primary outcomes

  1. CHANGE IN MASSETER MUSCLE THICKNESS MEASURED BY ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Time frame: Baseline (before temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis) and 3 months after temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis
