The objectives of this study were (1) to estimate the incidence of emergency general surgery in a Swiss University Hospital, (2) to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients undergoing such interventions, and (3) to study the impact of age on the outcomes.

Emergency general surgery following ED visit
Time frame: During index hospitalization
Admission to intensive care unit
Time frame: During index hospitalization
Number of days spent in the ICU during hospital stay
Time frame: 30 days
30-day mortality
Time frame: 90 days
90-day mortality
Time frame: One year
One-year mortality
Time frame: During index hospitalization
Hospital length of stay
Time frame: Hospital discharge
Dependent at discharge
