Human-Created vs AI-generated Art on Immediate Psychological Responses

This online randomized controlled trial will evaluate the immediate psychological effects of a brief human-created animated art film. U.S.-based adults recruited through Prolific will be randomized in Stanford Qualtrics to view a human-created animated art film, view an AI-created comparison video, or to a do-nothing control arm. Outcomes will be assessed immediately after exposure.

  • Able to read and understand English
  • Current Prolific participant
  • Able to provide electronic informed consent
  • Able to complete the study online using a computer or mobile device with internet access

Human-created Animated Art Film

AI-generated Comparator Film

Primary outcomes

  1. State Moral Elevation

    Time frame: Immediately after assigned exposure, within the single study session (approximately 10 minutes after enrollment).

    State moral elevation is assessed using a 9-item State Moral Elevation Scale. Each item is rated from 0 (Not at all) to 4 (Extremely). Item scores are summed to produce a total score ranging from 0 to 36, with higher scores indicating greater state moral elevation.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Change From Baseline in State Empathic Concern

    Time frame: Baseline and immediately after assigned exposure, within the single study session.

    State empathic concern is assessed using 4 items adapted from Batson's empathic concern scale: compassionate, sympathetic, warm, and tender. Each item is rated from 1 (Not at all) to 5 (Extremely). Item scores are summed to produce a total score ranging from 4 to 20, with higher scores indicating greater empathic concern.

  2. Change From Baseline in State Social Connection

    Time frame: Baseline and immediately after assigned exposure, within the single study session

    State social connection is assessed using the 10-item University of British Columbia State Social Connection Scale. Each item is rated from 1 (Strongly disagree) to 7 (Strongly agree). Negatively worded items are reverse scored and item scores are summed, yielding a total score from 10 to 70; higher scores indicate greater state social connection.

  3. Change From Baseline in State Hope

    Time frame: Baseline and immediately after assigned exposure, within the single study session.

    State hope is assessed using the 6-item State Hope Scale. Each item is rated from 1 (Definitely false) to 8 (Definitely true). Item scores are summed to produce a total score ranging from 6 to 48, with higher scores indicating greater state hope.

  4. Change From Baseline in Motivation to Improve Close Relationships

    Time frame: Baseline and immediately after assigned exposure, within the single study session.

    Motivation to put effort into improving close relationships is assessed with one investigator-developed visual analogue scale ranging from 1-100, with higher scores indicating greater motivation.
