Healthcare Provider Human Papillomavirus Education and Professional Skills Intervention

Healthcare providers (HCP) serving the El Paso U.S.-Mexico Border Region will be recruited to compare educational and professional skills interventions focused on the human papillomavirus (HPV). Our hypothesis is that improving provider knowledge and communication strategies about HPV and its vaccine will reduce hesitancy and increase uptake and completion among the populations they serve.

About this study

A sample of emerging [in training] and current [in practice] health professionals from the El Paso U.S.-Mexico Border Region will be recruited to participate in a human papillomavirus (HPV) educational and professional skills intervention. Hypothesis: improving provider knowledge and communication strategies about HPV and its vaccine will reduce hesitancy and increase uptake and completion among eligible individuals through a tailored multi-media intervention to strengthen providers' ability to discuss HPV and vaccination in an informed and culturally competent manner, and increase subsequent provider recommendations.

Healthy volunteers accepted: Yes

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Current (in practice) or emerging (in training - medical student, resident, or fellow) healthcare provider
  • Working/training or living in the El Paso U.S.-Mexico Border Region (i.e., El Paso County, TX-Southern New Mexico)
  • Have the authorization to recommend/prescribe/administer the HPV vaccine

Exclusion criteria

  • Unaffiliated with the El Paso U.S.-Mexico Border Region (i.e., El Paso County, TX-Southern New Mexico)
  • Participation in Phases I or II of the larger research project [cross-sectional phases]
  • Does not identify as a current or emerging healthcare provider
  • Declines or is unable to participate in the full intervention and follow-up time-points
  • Unable to complete participation and activities in the English language

Treatment and study plan

Tailored HPV Education and Professional Skills Intervention Group

Behavioral

The provider education and professional skills intervention will involve audio and visual content and will be delivered in the English language.

General HPV Education and Communication Skills Control Group

The general provider education intervention will involve audio and visual content and will be delivered in the English language.

Primary outcomes

  1. Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices Scale Score

    Time frame: Baseline

    Healthcare provider practices score were assessed using an 8-item Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices scale from the Healthcare Personnel Survey. The scale evaluated healthcare providers' HPV vaccine recommendation practices, HPV screening recommendation practices, and communication practices. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Never (1) to Always (5).

    Healthcare provider practices score is the average score over the 8 items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating better (more frequent engagement in recommended healthcare provider practices related to HPV prevention and screening).

  2. Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices Scale Score

    Time frame: 3 months post intervention

    Healthcare provider practices score were assessed using an 8-item Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices scale from the Healthcare Personnel Survey. The scale evaluated healthcare providers' HPV vaccine recommendation practices, HPV screening recommendation practices, and communication practices. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Never (1) to Always (5).

    Healthcare provider practices score is the average score over the 8 items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating better (more frequent engagement in recommended healthcare provider practices related to HPV prevention and screening).

  3. Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices Scale Score

    Time frame: 6 months post intervention

    Healthcare provider practices score were assessed using an 8-item Healthcare Provider (HCP) Practices scale from the Healthcare Personnel Survey. The scale evaluated healthcare providers' HPV vaccine recommendation practices, HPV screening recommendation practices, and communication practices. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Never (1) to Always (5).

    Healthcare provider practices score is the average score over the 8 items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating better (more frequent engagement in recommended healthcare provider practices related to HPV prevention and screening).

Secondary outcomes

  1. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Attitude Score

    Time frame: Immediately post-intervention (0 months).

    Healthcare provider (HCP) attitudes toward HPV and the HPV vaccine. The 9-item HPV Vaccine Attitudes scale assessed perceived safety, perceived harm, and perceived effectiveness of the HPV vaccine. Items were rated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Strongly disagree (1) to Strongly agree (5).

    A composite score was calculated by averaging responses across all assessed items, ranging from 1 to 5, with higher scores indicating more positive attitudes toward HPV vaccination.

  2. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Knowledge Score

    Time frame: Immediately post-intervention (0 months).

    Healthcare provider (HCP) knowledge about HPV and the HPV vaccine was assessed using post-intervention scores from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Knowledge Scale included in the healthcare personnel survey. The 14-item HPV Knowledge scale consisted of True/False items scored as True (1) or False (0).

    A composite score was calculated by averaging responses across all assessed items and multiplying the result by 100 to obtain a percentage score, ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater HPV-related knowledge.
