Cough augmentation techniques are important interventions for critically ill patients who have impaired cough strength due to mechanical ventilation, neuromuscular weakness, sedation, or respiratory muscle dysfunction. These techniques, which include manual assisted cough, lung volume recruitment, and mechanical insufflation-exsufflation, enhance expiratory airflow and improve the clearance of airway secretions

Inclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria
the lung volume recruitment maneuver via MV was applied with assistant of the attended physician as follows: Use pressure-controlled ventilation and increase end-inspiratory volume (30 or 40 cm H2O for 30 to 40 seconds unless contraindicated) or inspiratory hold for 30 to 40 seconds to promote cough effectiveness. The patient serially inhales a volume of gas without exhalation until maximum insufflation capacity via the ventilator to facilitate breath-holding (if not contraindicated).

measured through successful extubating
