Bruxism, Anxiety, and Periodontal Status Among Dental Students

This observational cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the relationship between bruxism, anxiety, and periodontal status among fourth- and fifth-year dental students at Al-Hawash Private University. Bruxism is a parafunctional habit that may be influenced by psychological stress and anxiety, and it may be associated with periodontal changes. Dental students are an important population to study due to their academic workload and potential stress exposure. The study will assess probable bruxism, anxiety levels, and periodontal parameters to identify possible associations between these variables.

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Undergraduate dental students in the fourth or fifth year.
  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Willing to participate and provide written informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

  • Orthodontic treatment.
  • Systemic disease affecting periodontal status.
  • Medications that may affect bruxism or anxiety.
  • Major psychiatric disorders.
  • Pregnancy, if relevant to periodontal assessment.
  • Incomplete questionnaire or incomplete clinical data.

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. Anxiety level

    Time frame: At enrollment

    Assessed using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire. Anxiety will be measured as a continuous score and may also be categorized into minimal, mild, moderate, and severe anxiety.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Probable Bruxism

    Time frame: At enrollment

    Assessed by self-reported symptoms and clinical signs. Bruxism status will be classified as present or absent.

  2. Periodontal Screening and Recording Index

    Time frame: At enrollment

    Periodontal parameters are measured using the WHO probe by dividing the mouth into six sextants (three upper, three lower). The highest score in each sextant is recorded. Scoring from 0-4 is based on pocket depth, gingival health, and calculus presence.

    Scoring Criteria:

    0: Healthy periodontium, black band visible.

    • Bleeding on probing (BOP), black band visible.
    • Calculus present, black band visible.
    • Pocket depth 3.5-5.5 mm (black band partially submerged).
    • Pocket depth > 5.5 mm (black band entirely hidden).
