A Community Practice Program to Enhance Nursing Students' Career Motivation in Geriatric Nursing

The nursing students' community practice program is nested within the mHealth-based healthcare professional-lay health worker partnership program (mHLPP). This sub-project aims to equip undergraduate nursing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to care for underprivileged older adults.

About this study

The study includes two phases: (1) a wait-list randomized controlled study (Year 1) to evaluate the intervention effectiveness, and (2) a quasi-experimental study (Year 2) for intervention optimization. In the first phase, participants will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the wait-list control group. The intervention group will undergo a PERMA Model-Based Community Practice Program, including an orientation, three practicum sessions, and a reflective session. In the second phase, participants of will receive a Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) Model Based Community Practicum Program with increased intervention frequency.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: Yes

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • (1) being a full-time student in the first year of the nursing program; (2) being capable to communicate in Cantonese; (3) providing voluntary written informed consent to participate in the study.

Exclusion criteria

  • (1) having prior work experience in a dedicated aged care setting (e.g., as a nursing assistant in a nursing home); (2) having a planned absence during the intervention period that would cause them to miss more than two sessions of the program.

Treatment and study plan

A PERMA Model-Based Community Practice Program

Behavioral

The 12-hour clinical practice program is guided by the Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments (PERMA) framework. The intervention group undergoes an orientation, three practicum sessions, and a reflective session.

Wait-list Comparator

Behavioral

The wait-list control group will not receive any intervention for the first 3-month period.

A COM-B Model Based Community Practicum Program

Behavioral

The participants receive a 80-hour Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) Model Based Community Practicum Program.

Primary outcomes

  1. Career motivation

    Time frame: Phase 1: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 18 (T3), and week 30 (T4); Phase 2: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 24 (T3).

    Career motivation will be assessed in phase one and two using the Situation Motivation Scale (SIMS) questionnaire.

  2. Willingness to Work with Elderly People

    Time frame: Phase 2: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 24 (T3).

    Willingness to choose a career in gerontological nursing will be primarily assessed in phase two using the Willingness to Work with Elderly People Scale (WEPS).

Secondary outcomes

  1. Knowledge

    Time frame: Phase 1: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 18 (T3), and week 30 (T4); Phase 2: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 24 (T3).

    The Facts on Aging Quiz 2 (FAQ 2) was utilized to evaluate knowledge about aging in phase one and two.

  2. Attitude towards elderly care

    Time frame: Phase 1: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 18 (T3), and week 30 (T4); Phase 2: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 24 (T3).

    Participants' attitudes toward elderly care will be assessed in phase one and two using the Attitudes Toward Old People (ATOP) scale.

  3. Empathy

    Time frame: Phase 2: Baseline (T1), week 12 (T2), week 24 (T3).

    Changes in students' empathetic orientation will be measured in phase two using the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Profession Students' Version (JSE-HPS).
