Clinical Presentation of Celiac Disease in Last 14 Years

The aim of this study is to:

* To determine the pattern of clinical presentations of celiac disease (CD) over the past 10 - 14 years in Egyptian children. * To study the various clinical presentation of CD in Egyptian children. * To evaluate the pattern of CD in relation to different age groups in our children. * To correlate between the clinical presentations of celiac disease and the upper GIT endoscopic findings.

About this study

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated systemic disease triggered by intake of gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible individuals, characterized by presence of various combinations of small intestinal damages, celiac specific antibodies, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8, and gluten-dependent clinical manifestations. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Children in the age range from 6 months to 15 years diagnosed with Celiac disease.
  • Any sex.

Exclusion criteria

  • Age less than 6 months or more than 15 years.
  • Patients or parents unwilling to share their personal, social and medical data or refuse to participate in the study.
  • Celiac disease patients with other gastrointestinal or non-gastrointestinal diseases (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease) that might interfere with data interpretation.

Treatment and study plan

Retrospective Medical Record Review

No therapeutic or diagnostic intervention will be administered as part of this study. Existing medical records will be retrospectively reviewed to collect demographic, clinical, laboratory, serological, endoscopic, and histopathological data relating to children diagnosed with celiac disease between January 2009 and December 2023.

Primary outcomes

  1. Pattern of Clinical Presentations of Pediatric Celiac Disease

    Time frame: 12 months post-procedure

    The percentage of children presenting with celiac disease will be determined.
