Recall and Perceived Applicability of Ganzouri Airway Scoring System Versus LEMON Score for Airway Assessment Among Anesthesia Residents

Securing a patent airway stands as one of the most fundamental obligations in anesthetic practice, and the timely recognition of a potentially difficult airway prior to induction is of paramount importance for patient safety.

Two of the most widely recognized examples are the Ganzouri Airway Scoring system and the LEMON score. The Ganzouri Airway scoring system integrates seven distinct clinical parameters; mouth opening, thyromental distance, Mallampati classification, neck range of motion, ability to prognath, body weight, and history of prior difficult intubation, each carrying a weighted numerical value whose sum reflects the probability of encountering a difficult airway.

Inclusion criteria

• Enrolled anesthesiology residents.
• Currently training at Kasr Al-Ainy Hospitals.
• Willing to participate and provide informed consent.
• Available for entire study duration (baseline through 2-week followup).
• First-year residents who didn't receive training in Ganzouri or LEMON Airway scoring systems.

Exclusion criteria

• Residents with prior formal training in either Ganzouri or LEMON Airway scoring systems (defined as structured lecture or workshop exceeding 30 minutes).
• Residents who will be on leave, rotation at external sites, or otherwise unavailable during the 2-week follow-up period.
• Refusal to participate or provide consent.
