Prevalence of Helicobacter Pylori Infection

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative spiral-shaped bacterium that is a major cause of chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers, and duodenal ulcers. It is also a significant pathogenic factor in gastric cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), H. pylori is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen. A community-based screening and eradication program in Matsu, Taiwan has shown that active screening and eradication of H. pylori effectively reduced the incidence and mortality of gastric cancer. Currently, there is a lack of basic epidemiological data on the prevalence of H. pylori infection in Palau. This study aims to investigate the prevalence among adults in Palau to provide a reference for future public health intervention strategies.

Studies on H. pylori prevalence in Pacific Island nations have shown varying infection rates. For example, the prevalence among adults has been reported at around 60-70% in some regions, such as Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, with lower rates observed in urbanized areas of Fiji and higher rates in rural communities. These findings emphasize the importance of regional data collection to inform targeted public health responses.

Inclusion criteria

• Residents of Palau aged 18 years or older

Exclusion criteria

• Individuals who have used antibiotics within the past 4 weeks or proton pump inhibitors within the past 2 weeks
