Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Lipid Profile in Hospitalized Mexican Adults

Traditional cardiovascular risk models are limited in capturing functional alterations in HDL-C linked to smoking and diet in Latin American populations. We analyzed the relationship between traditional and non-traditional risk factors and the serum lipid profile of hospitalized Mexican adults, emphasizing HDL-C behavior.

About this study

An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted in 70 adults following the STROBE statement. Non-parametric tests, Huber's robust multiple regression, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were performed.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: Yes

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Men and women over 18 years of age who are capable of deciding wheter to participate in the study or not.

Exclusion criteria

  • Men and women under 18 years of age, or men and women over 18 years of age who are already under pharmacologic lipid-lowering treatment of any kind.

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. Measure serum lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, VLDL-C)

    Time frame: Baseline

Differences in serum lipid concentrations (mg/dL) according to traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors, with emphasis on HDL-C as an indirect marker of antiatherogenic dysfunction

Secondary outcomes

  1. Measure HDL-C concentration by smoking status

    Time frame: Baseline

Comparison of HDL-C levels between active smokers and non-smokers

  2. Measure Triglyceride and VLDL-C levels in patients with diabetes mellitus

    Time frame: Baseline

Comparison of triglyceride and VLDL-C concentrations by diabetes mellitus diagnosis

  3. Measure HDL-C levels by ultraprocessed beverage consumption

    Time frame: Baseline

Association between self-reported ultraprocessed beverage intake and HDL-C concentration

  4. Identify anthropometric predictors of lipid profile

    Time frame: Baseline

Contribution of weight, height, and BMI to each lipid variable via multiple regression and structural equation models
