Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • current cannabis use disorder
  • active cannabis use,
  • camera/technology/phone access
  • able to give informed consent.

Exclusion criteria

  • inability to speak English
  • conditions precluding informed consent, full participation, or understanding of interventions/assessments
  • past 90-day cannabis use disorder/substance use disorder treatment
  • current cancer treatment
  • medical cannabis certification for current cancer, end-of-life care, or progressive debilitating disease
  • active moderate/severe other substance use disorder(s) or injection drug use

Treatment and study plan

Motivational and Behavioral Economics Informed Intervention

Behavioral

6 session telemedicine-delivered intervention with coaching sessions and small incentives for activity engagement.

Enhanced Usual Care

Behavioral

Brief psychoeducation and referral resources

Primary outcomes

  1. Cannabis use

    Time frame: 3-, 6-, 12-months

    Change in frequency of cannabis use measured by the Timeline Follow Back

Secondary outcomes

  1. Cannabis use disorder symptoms

    Time frame: 3-, 6-, 12-months

    Change in cannabis use disorder symptoms measured by the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual-5 checklist where higher scores indicate a worse outcome (0 min score, 11 max score)

  2. Depressive symptoms

    Time frame: 3-, 6-, 12-months

    Change in depression symptom severity as measured by Patient Health Questionnaire-where higher scores indicate a worse outcome (min score = 0, max score = 24)

  3. Anxiety symptoms

    Time frame: 3-, 6-, 12-months

    Change in anxiety symptom severity as measured by Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaire where higher scores indicate a worse outcome (min score = 0, max score = 21)
