Effectiveness of School-Based Solution Focused Brief Therapy for Academic and Behavioral Problems in Adolescents

This randomized wait-list controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of School-Based Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) for adolescents experiencing academic and behavioral problems. Eligible students will be randomly assigned to either an immediate intervention group or a wait-list control group. Outcomes related to academic functioning and behavioral problems will be assessed at baseline and post-intervention to determine the effectiveness of SFBT in improving student outcomes.

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Adolescents enrolled in grades 6-8.
Identified through teacher and peer nominations as having academic and behavioral difficulties.
Student consent was obtained.

Treatment and study plan

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Behavioral

Five weekly sessions (40-50 minutes each) delivered in groups of 8-10 adolescents in school settings.

Primary outcomes

Change in Behavioral Problems scores measured by The Pediatric Symptom Checklist

Time frame: Baseline, Post-test (after 5 weeks)

The Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 (PSC-17; Gardner et al., 1999) is a 17-item self-report measure of emotional and behavioural problems in adolescents.
Change in Academic Problems scores measured by Student Stress Inventory

Time frame: Baseline, Post-test (after 5 weeks)

The student stress inventory will be used to assess the academic problems of adolescents before and after intervention
