Velocity-Based vs Percentage-Based Strength Training in Young Football Players

The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of six weeks of velocity-based (VBT) and traditional percentage-based (TRD) strength training on 20m sprint, vertical jump, and aerobic capacity in elite young football players. The main questios it aims to answer is: Does VBT have higher positive effects than TRD on the above-mentioned markers.

Researchers compared VBT to TRD to see if VBT works to enhannce better 20m sprint, vertical jump, and aerobic capacity in elite young football players.

About this study

All participants had been following the same training program for the previous two months: five weekly training sessions (each lasting 60-90 minutes) and one match, with intensity ranging from 50-90% of maximum heart rate calculated using the Karvonen method, monitored with Polar V800 devices. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups, with equal distribution across age categories: 1) Traditional Strength Training (TRD), 2) Velocity-Based Squat Training (Sq_V), 3) Velocity-Based Squat + Bench Press Training (SqBp_V). Study protocols were performed in 3 consecutive day/week imediatilly after regularly soccer practice. In the TRD group, only the 1-RM duration was calculated in the first week, while in the SqBp_V and Sq_V groups, 1-RM durations were calculated weekly, and the 6-week training program was updated weekly based on these 1-RM durations. The last weight lifted was recorded as 1-RM in kg. The number of sets and repetitions was matched between TRD and Sq_V groups. However, BpSq_V group performed program like Sq_V plus bench press used same procedure. Therefore, total weekly volume (sets × repetitions × exercises) was matched between the VBT and Sd_V group. Pre-tests were conducted one week prior to the intervention, and post tests one week after completion (Figures 1 and 2). 20m Sprint, CMJ, and Yo-Yo IR2 were performed as pre test and post test. All work-outs and tests were familirized two day before pre test. Study was conducted on natural grass and in a fitness facility between 16:00-18:00 at 20-24°C and 60-70% humidity.

Inclusion criteria

  • Male football players aged 16-18 years
  • Minimum 5 years of licensed competitive football experience
  • At least 3 years of structured strength-training experience
  • No previous experience with velocity-based training (VBT)
  • Free from musculoskeletal injury during the previous 6 months
  • Willingness to comply with all study procedures and provide written informed consent

Exclusion criteria

  • Previous participation in a VBT program
  • Any musculoskeletal injury within the previous 6 months
  • Use of medications or stimulants that may affect physical performance
  • Any cardiovascular, neurological, or metabolic disorder that could interfere with study participation
  • Failure to complete baseline testing or intervention procedures

Velocity Based Squat and Bench Press Training

Primary outcomes

  1. Countermovement jump (CMJ)

    Time frame: From enrollment to the end of exercise programme at 6 weeks

    In the CMJ test, the vertical jump distance was determined with an Infinitek (Infinitek Company, Istanbul, Turkey) electronic vertical jump device. The subject performed two trials with a 60-second passive rest interval. The better result was recorded

  2. 20m Sprint

    Time frame: From enrollment to the end of exercise programme at 6 weeks

    A wireless 2-door Sinar (Turkey) brand photocell device was used to measure the subjects' 20-meter speed. The subjects ran 20m sprints twice with a 3-minute interval, and the better time was recorded. Walk forward naturally, arm relaxed and postüre tall 3 m before timing line. After final step before the line subject accelerated.

  3. Aerobic capacity

    Time frame: From enrollment to the end of exercise programme at 6 weeks

    Aerobic capacity was determined by Yo-Yo IR2. In this test, participants perform 2x20-meter shuttle runs at gradually increasing speeds, moving forward and backwards between starting, turning, and finishing lines. Between each shuttle run, there is a 10-second active recovery period of walking or jogging within a 5-meter area. The running speed during the test is determined by alert sounds automatically controlled from a CD player. Cones are used to mark 2 m-wide, 20 m-long running lanes. Each lane has another cone placed 5 m behind the starting line, which indicates the active recovery zone. The test ends when the athlete's strength runs out or when they fail to reach the finish line twice, and the total distance run in the test (including the final shuttle run that is not completed) is calculated as the test result. Total covered distance was measured in this test. VO2max = distance (m) * 0.0136 + 45.3

Secondary outcomes

  1. TRD One maximum repetition - Squat (TRD 1-RM Squat):

    Time frame: Before enrollment to exercise programme.

    TRD 1-RM Squat was determined using the traditional percentage method. Before the athletes began the test, their coach determined the appropriate weight for them. It was recommended that athletes start with lower weights for anatom

  2. One maximum repetition - Squat VBT (1-RM Squat VBT)

    Time frame: Before enrollment to exercise programme.

    1-RM Squat VBT was measured weekly using an Apple iPhone 7 Plus - iOS 12.4.1 (Apple, Inc., USA) via the My Lift application (My Jump Lab, Spain). Before the athlete began the exercises, a command was given to start the movements. The requested movement (Squat) was uploaded to the Apple phone and recorded. The range of motion for the participants during the squat was measured in meters. In the squat exercise, participants were asked to squat with their knees at 90° of flexion, then immediately return to the starting position (knee and hip joints in full extension).

  3. One maximum repetition - Bench Press VBT (1-RM Bench press VBT)

    Time frame: Before enrollment to exercise programme.

    1-RM Bench press VBT was measured weekly using an Apple iPhone 7 Plus - iOS 12.4.1 (Apple, Inc., USA) via the My Lift application (My Jump Lab, Spain). Before the athlete began the exercises, a command was given to start the movements. The requested movement (bench press) was uploaded to the Apple phone and recorded. The range of motion for the participants during the bench press was measured in meters. In the bench press exercise, participants were asked to lowering the bar up to chest, then immediately return to the starting position (elbow in full extension). Before starting the speed-based strength training measurement the distance from the centre of the bar to participants's chest, and entered this information into the My Lift app program as requested.
