Pre-Exercise Hyperventilation Effects on Wingate Test

This study investigates the acute effects of pre-exercise voluntary hyperventilation on pulmonary gas exchange, cardiovascular responses, and anaerobic performance during a 30-second Wingate test in athletic males using a randomized crossover design.

About this study

Background The purpose of this study was to examine how hyperventilation (HV) affected pulmonary gas exchange, cardiovascular responses, and supramaximal performance during a 30-second Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT).

Methods In a randomized crossover design, 18 athletic males completed both a control session and an HV session (30 breaths/min for 2 min prior to the WAnT).

Healthy volunteers accepted: Yes

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Being a healthy male competitive athlete aged 18-26 years
  • Having at least three years of consistent anaerobic training experience
  • Being a nonsmoker

Exclusion criteria

  • Having any cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurological, or pulmonary disorders

Treatment and study plan

Pre-exercise Voluntary Hyperventilation

Other

Participants performed voluntary hyperventilation at a rate of 30 breaths/min for 2 minutes prior to the 30-second Wingate anaerobic test.

Control Conditions

Other

Participants performed the 30-second Wingate test under control conditions without pre-exercise hyperventilation.

  1. Peak Power Output and Mean Power Output during the 30-second Wingate test

    Time frame: During the 30-second Wingate test

Secondary outcomes

  1. Pulmonary Gas Exchange responses during the 30-second Wingate test (measured via COSMED Quark CPET system)

    Time frame: During the 30-second Wingate test

  2. Heart Rate Responses during the 30-second Wingate test (measured via COSMED Quark CPET system)
