Anxiety Skills Study

The purposes of this study are: (1) to identify baseline predictors of relative success in cognitive, behavioral, and mindfulness-based treatments for anxiety, (2) explore who benefits from a brief, video-based skill training compared to receiving 4 sessions of therapy, and (3) to evaluate how durable these effects are over 1 year.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Presence of clinically elevated anxiety
  • Living in Ohio

Exclusion criteria

  • No access to a smartphone
  • Presence of conditions that would necessitate alternative care

Treatment and study plan

Cognitive therapy involves identifying and challenging negative automatic thoughts.

Behavioral therapy

Behavioral

Behavioral therapy involves identifying emotional urges and acting opposite to those urges.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Behavioral

Mindfulness-based therapy involves cultivating nonjudgmental present-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Primary outcomes

  1. Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale (OASIS)

    Time frame: Weekly for 6 weeks, then monthly for 1 year.

    Minimum value: 0. Maximum value = 20. High scores mean worse outcomes.

Secondary outcomes

  1. Overall Depression Severity and Impairment Scale (ODSIS)

    Time frame: Weekly for 6 weeks, then monthly for 1 year.

    Minimum = 0. Maximum = 20. Higher scores mean worse outcomes.
