Effectiveness of PACU vs HCU Postoperative Care

To determine the effectiveness of postoperative hospital length of stay and the number of ICU or HCU step-up cases among elective postoperative patients observed in the PACU and HCU.

Who can participate

Healthy volunteers accepted: No

Only the study team can determine whether someone qualifies for participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Adult patients aged more than 18 years.
  • Patients undergoing elective surgery in the Kanigara RSCM, PESC, RPT, or Kirana operating rooms.
  • Patients undergoing postoperative observation in the PACU or HCU.
  • Patients classified as Level II or III based on the Modified Johns Hopkins Surgical Criteria.
  • Patients who are willing to participate in the study and sign the informed consent form.

Exclusion criteria

  • Patients undergoing postoperative observation directly in the ICU.
  • Patients undergoing open-heart surgery.
  • Patients undergoing emergency surgery in the emergency operating room.

Treatment and study plan

Primary outcomes

  1. number of ICU or HCU step-up cases

    Time frame: from the day of surgery until the patient is discharged from the hospital or the patient dies up to 30 days

    Patients receiving care in the general ward, surgical HCU, or PACU after elective surgery in the Kanigara operating room who experience clinical deterioration requiring admission to the ICU or HCU according to the ICU or HCU admission criteria at RSCM.

  2. postoperative hospital length of stay

    Time frame: from the day of surgery until the patient is discharged from the hospital or the patient dies up to 30 days

    The duration of postoperative care is calculated from the day of surgery until the patient is discharged from the hospital or dies.
